TCP/IP has classified the IP address into five different classes and all of them possess different tasks. The first three IP address classes are made in order to host addresses. What is an IP Address?
An IP address is a unique number which is assigned to each device for recognizing the personal identity. It stores a lot of information including device ID, cookies, etc. It’s just like a mailing address which recognizes from where and to deliver the information.
But the difference lies in the case of the data it transfers. As it’s a digital number, it only transfers the digital information from one device to the another. Normally, the data is transferred using the Internet protocol.
Let’s go back to 1974 when the IP address development came into existence and two data scientists Bob Kahn & Vint serf started doing the research. At that time, it was mainly used for the conjunction of transmission control protocol.
Later in 1981, the first and one of the major Internet protocols came into existence which was known as IPv4 and which was the main successor version of the internet protocols. As of 2019, IPv6 has a share of almost 20% of the internet traffic.

IP Address Classes
As we have discussed above that there are normally five different IP address classes which we can see in the table given below:

Static vs Dynamic IP Address: What’s the Difference?
IP address can be assigned in two different ways. They can be assigned either in Static or in a dynamic way. If the IP address is statically assigned, then it involves the manual change of the IP address. On the other hand, if the IP address is assigned dynamically, then it can be changed automatically. Most of the home networks use the dynamic assignment of the IP address. Let’s explore the types of IP address and their functions as follows:
|192.168.1.0||This number is the basic one which identifies the network as a whole and is not assigned to a particular device.|
|192.168.1.1||The most common and used number which is assigned to every home gateway device.|
|192.168.1.2||Another one number which is normally assigned to the home gateway device.|
|192.168.1.3-254||This one is normally assigned to the devices on a particular network.|
|192.168.1.255||This one is the broadcaster address which transfers the data over the whole network.|

How does the Data Transfers From One IP address to Another?
- The process starts when your device asks your router to assign an IP address.
- The router assigns a local IP address to your device.
- Then, your router asks the server to assign an IP address in order to connect to the internet.
- The IPv4 or IPv6 assigns the internet access to your device and then you can start using the internet and IP address without any issues.
