What Is An Electric Circuit?

An electric circuit is a closed path that transmits electric current through the medium of electrical and magnetic fields. The follow of electrons ion t5eh wires helps the current to flow in the closed-loop.

The electrons enter the circuit through the source. The source can either be a battery or a generator; you just need to provide enough energy to the electrons to start moving.

The electrons leave the circuit through the load to the earth; thus, completing the circuit. Here the load can be anything. For instance, TV, fans, electric heater, fridge, and light bulb can be considered loads. To put it simply, a simple electric circuit consists of a source, medium, and load.

Basic Circuit Element

As I have already discussed the electrical circuits in the above section, an electrical circuit comprises different elements. These elements are divided into active elements and passive elements. It is these elements that decide the capacity to generate energy.

Active Element

Active elements are those that generate energy. It includes the following:

  • Battery.
  • Generator.
  • Diode.
  • Operational amplifiers.

As it is an electrical circuit, you must note that the source element is the most significant active element.

The energy source has two different current sources: Dependent and Independent. A dependent source is a transistor that provides current to the circuit. On the other hand, an Independent source is a battery that provides a contact supply of current.

Passive Element

Passive elements are the part of the circuit that control the flow of the electrons through them. That means, with the regulation of the passive element, you can either increase or decrease the voltage.

Here are a few examples of passive elements.

  • Resistors: A resistor opposes the flow of the current.
  • Inductors: An inductor stores energy in the form of an electromagnetic field.

Types Of Electrical Circuit

Electrical circuits are of different types. And each type is meant to perform differently.

  • DC Circuit: DC circuits have a constant flow of current. It can be further classified into series and parallel circuits.
  • Series Circuit: In the series circuit, all the loads are arranged on the same circuit. To put it simply, you can consider all the loads as a single cumulative load.
  • Parallel Circuit: In the parallel circuit, one source terminal is connected to the one terminal of the load. And another terminal of the source with the other terminal of the load. Now, if a different load is added, the terminal configuration remains the same.
  • AC Circuit: AC circuits are those circuits that get excited with AC current. Unlike DC current, where you experience a steady current flow, AC circuits have alternating current with fluctuating voltage at regular intervals.
